The Global Union?
The world has been heading toward globalization, or a new world order possibly for hundreds of years, some say longer. While many believe the new world order is a wild conspiracy theory, the fact that globalization is unfolding right in front of us cannot be ignored. The creation of the United Nations and European Union are probably the most well known and important accomplishements toward acheiving a new world order. The European Union is currently trying to even further centralize power throughout the continent with the Treaty of Lisbon. In addition to the many unions of nations throughout the world, trade agreements, secret meetings attended by the worlds most influential people, central banks, and unified currency are other very powerful tools used to further centralization of power and create a global union, or new world order. One of the final stages may be the North American Union.
Doesn't this change what we know about our world order today? What keeps it running the way it does and why do we always have some kind of war or conflict happening somewhere at any given time? We generally agree that the world consists of many countries that are independent, self-governing states. Some of these countries are allies, have diplomatic relations and trade agreements, and others are constantly at war with one another. Each country has it's own leader, or group of leaders and can decide how their country will generally be run without influence of another country. I know your thinking "of course, I know, this is common knowledge", but let's pretend for a moment that we were born yesterday and don't know anything.
How many countries are there in the world? The answer to this question isn't as clear as you might think. The United States' State Department recognises 194 countries. Some sources put the number at 192, others at 195. The CIA factbook lists more than 200 countries but many of these are not self-governing, they are territories of and governed by other countries. There are 192 members of the U.N. The Vatican City and Kosovo are considered to be independent countries that are not members of the U.N. This means that in the entire world, only 2 countries recognized by United States are not members of the U.N., and in my opinion, the Vatican City is not a country, it is a place located within the city of Rome. Rome is located within the country of Italy, which is a member of the U.N. So that leaves us with one country in the world that isn't a member of the United Nations.
The European Union
The E.U. is made up of 27 countries that have been integrated into a single regional system that shares a common currency, a central bank, and legal system. The E.U. is based on a series of treaties, these first established the European Community and the EU, and then made amendments to those founding treaties. These are power-giving treaties which set broad policy goals and establish institutions with the necessary legal powers to implement those goals. These legal powers include the ability to enact legislation which can directly affect all member states and their inhabitants. Under the principle of supremacy, national courts are required to enforce the treaties that their member states have ratified, and thus the laws enacted under them, even if doing so requires them to ignore conflicting national law, and (within limits) even constitutional provisions.
With the Treaty of Lisbon the EU's power will be further streamlined and centralized into the hands of few. The E.U. also has representation in the U.N. So, this begs the question: When the United Nations gets together and talks about how things should be done, do the 27 European countries have their own input, or does the E.U. represent them all as a whole? Is it reasonable to consider the E.U. to be one country, subtracting 27 from the total number of countries in the world?
The African Union
The A.U., established in 2002, is made up of 53 African countries, this is the entire continent excluding Morocco. Like the E.U., the A.U. also is working toward establishing its own central bank and currency, the Afro. Assembly of the A.U. can make decisions affecting the continent based on a two-thirds vote but has been giving its powers away the Pan African Parliament which consists of 265 elected officials from the 53 member states. Interestingly, the symbol of the A.U. has an image of the continent of Africa with no internal borders drawn which seems to be consistent with the current trend. It seems quite obvious that the intentions of the African Union or the same as that of the European Union. Once again we see the integration of individual states into superstates. One might conclude that now, or at some time in the near future the A.U. is, or will become one single state overriding the legal systems of its member states. Is it rational then, to say that we can subtract 53 more countries from our total?
Asia Cooperation Dialogue
Created in 2002, the Asian Cooperation Dialogue has 31 states as members and is aiming to include all Asian countries. It is seen by many to be a predecessor of an Asian Union, much like the E.U. and A.U. The four main objectives of the ACD are:
* To promote interdependence among Asian countries in all areas of cooperation by identifying Asia's common strengths and opportunities which will help reduce poverty and improve the quality of life for Asian people whilst developing a knowledge-based society within Asia and enhancing community and people empowerment.
* To expand the trade and financial market within Asia and increase the bargaining power of Asian countries in lieu of competition and, in turn, enhance Asia's economic competitiveness in the global market.
* To serve as the missing link of Asia by building upon Asia's potentials and strengths through supplementing and complementing existing cooperative frameworks so as to become a viable partner for other regions
* To ultimately transform the Asian continent into an Asian Community, capable of interacting with the rest of the world on a more equal footing and contributing more positively towards mutual peace and prosperity.
Shall we scratch 31 more off the list?
Union of South American Nations
Intentionally modelled on the European Union, the USAN focuses on South American integration and is to have a common currency, central bank, passport, and Parliament. The USAN includes 12 countries, this is every country in South America except for French Guiana, which is a member of the E.U. Subtract 12.
The North American Union
Last but not least we have the N.A.U. Though not officially a union, it is highly rumoured to be in the making. Most of the information on this is to be considered speculation based on evidence. I don't know for a fact that the rumours or theories on this are true, but I can't say that i would not at all be surprised given that up to this point we have basically circled the globe while counting the unions so far. First, lets look at the borders. The border between Canada and the United States is the longest open border in the world, there is little security or regulation concerning traffic crossing it.
We all know that the southern border with Mexico is very poorly maintained and that there are probably millions of illegal Mexican immigrants in the United States. The government seems to put in very little effort into securing our border to the south and any customs/border patrol officer working down there will tell you they are greatly undermanned. On September 5, 2003, California Governor Gray Davis signed into law State Senate Bill 60, which would allow some two million illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses beginning January 1, 2004. Under the new law, which amended the state's Vehicle Code, applicants for driver's licenses may present a Federal Tax Identification Number (TIN) issued by the Internal Revenue Service, if they don't have an SS number. In addition, the applicant will have to be fingerprinted. However, the prints cannot be used by immigration officials to determine a person's residency status. Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin currently do not require applicants to show they are lawfully present in the United States. This doesn't seem like something a country with isolationist views would allow to happen.
The transamerica highway is only further evidence of coming North American Union, stretching from deep within Mexico, through the U.S. and into Canada, this superhighway will make our borders a thing of the past.
The purpose of this highway is to promote trade within North America under the NAFTA agreement. The highway will be 400 yards wide and allow Mexican trucks to haul goods from ports in Mexico and through Texas before reaching the "smart port complex" in Kansas City where they will be inspected for the first time by a Mexican customs office.
A Council on Foreign Relations report stated: The three governments should commit themselves to the long-term goal of dramatically diminishing the need for the current intensity of the governments' physical control of cross-border traffic, travel, and trade within North America. A long-term goal for a North American border action plan should be joint screening of travelers from third countries at their first point of entry into North America and the elimination of most controls over the temporary movement of these travelers within North America.
Conclusion
With the completion of the North American Union the New World Order shouldn't be far behind. We are seeing a world that is becoming increasingly integrated and interdependent, how could this not lead to one world government? What type of government do you think it will be?
